We Are the Whale

A project about the vulnerability of humans and nature

A dose of solace, with dialogue and creativity at its heart

The Project

In a world that turns ever faster, many are left behind. People living with vulnerability – whether dealing with mental, social, or physical challenges – often struggle to feel seen and connected. But what if we learn to reconnect, not with words, but with a simple gesture? Through dialogue and creativity? What if a paintbrush and a washed-up whale could build a bridge toward greater resilience?

‘We Are the Whale’

is a socially engaged artistic project by Wim Opbrouck and the expedition team of the Institute for Research into the Enchantment of the Seas (IOBZ).

The whale embarks on an adventurous and cathartic journey in search of the identity and universality of the vulnerability of humans and nature.

Together with vulnerable groups and care providers, Wim Opbrouck paints the whale black, layer after layer. This repetitive, humble act is a ritual that not only brings people together, but also opens hearts.

For aren’t we all that whale?

IOBZ

The Institute for Research into the Enchantment of the Seas (IOBZ) explores the relationship between humans and the North Sea at the intersection of art, science and economics.

Wim Opbrouck and the IOBZ expedition team seek to explore both the enchantment, wonder and joy of the seas, as well as their serious and urgent suffering, and translate these into a dynamic, inspiring and creative narrative.

Big and small stories with impact. Specific tales that forge connections, inspire, inform and enchant people. Time and time again.
